About Dharma Rocks
Dharma Rocks began with a simple idea, borrowed from the kindness-rock movement: paint a small stone with a gentle, mindful message and leave it for a stranger to find. A few words - “this moment is enough”, “may you be well” - can meet someone exactly when they need it.
What makes a message “Dharma”?
We use “Dharma” loosely and warmly: messages rooted in loving-kindness, presence, patience, and compassion. You don’t need to be a Buddhist, or any faith at all. The only rule is kindness - nothing preachy, nothing that pressures the finder.
How to take part
- Paint a smooth rock with a short, kind message.
- Seal it if you can (a clear outdoor varnish helps it last), so the paint doesn’t wash into the environment. See our paints & supplies for kind, non-toxic options.
- Leave it somewhere gentle and public - never on private property, protected land, or anywhere it could cause harm.
- Register your rock to give it a code and a journey, then write the code on the back so whoever finds it can follow - and add to - its story.
- Share a story or a photo so others can feel the ripple.
Kindness & safety
- Keep messages supportive and inclusive - never targeting anyone.
- Follow local guidance about leaving objects in parks and nature reserves; when in doubt, choose pavements, walls, and benches.
- Use non-toxic paint and avoid loose glitter or materials that harm wildlife.
Find your people - chapters
Chapters are small local groups who meet to paint and hide rocks together. Find one near you on the privacy-friendly map, or start your own.
Follow a rock’s journey
Found a painted rock with a code on the back? Enter the code to see where it has been and add your own sighting - each rock builds a little timeline of the kindness it has carried.
